report from the food front

July 3, 2008

I tried a Cambodian egg today. The embryo inside was half-developed and it was half-cooked with charcoals before it was served to me.

The egg is eaten with a powdery condiment which reminded me of the same thing used for lok lac. It is placed in a egg cup and the fat end is cracked before the insides are eaten with a small spoon. The lady had to help me crack my egg.

The insides are watery and I could make out the yolk and white, as well as the half-developed fetus. Sadly I was unable to identify exactly what kind of egg it was, chicken or duck, because the fetus was not developed enough.

It tasted exactly like egg. The yolk tasted like a normal yolk only more pungent while the whites are too hard to eat. The fetus tasted like the yolk too, only with a slimy and more substantial texture.

The breads from the Blue Pumpkin were great. Nothing beats munching on a loaf of cereal bread while cruising down the Tonle Sap in a speedboat while hungry ang mohs who have not eaten their breakfast and are unable to obtain their breakfast look on. I gave the remaining half loaf to the begging kids at Phnom Sampeau. The carrot and walnut muffin was very nice; I wished I had tried it earlier so I could have bought more. The apple turnover was too soggy by the time I ate it in the morning. Sad.

I am drunk on fruit shake. I had a grape fruit shake, as well as a mango fruit shake at this place called the White Rose restaurant in Battambang, at the ridiculous price of 2500 riels each (about 1.4 SGD). I feel sooo bloated. But I am happy. :)
