the kids are not alright

There are small brown stains on my white polo shirt now. Earlier today when we were traveling back to town from the Killing Fields of Cheong Ek in our tuk-tuk a bunch of kids jumped onto the vehicle and begged for money and food. They were literally shouting and demanding food and money and anything we can give, and they clung on to the vehicle in precarious positions, one from the back and the other two hanging onto the aluminium handles on the side. One observation we’ve made here is the common theme behind road names.

In Phnom Penh, roads can be named ph. [number] with numbers ranging from say 7 to 358. It is a most orderly way system of naming roads although the particular order escapes me. Read the rest of this entry »

The Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng

As promised, today saw us take the trip to tour two of modern Cambodia’s darkest and most terrible places: the Killing Fields, where thousands of ordinary Cambodians were murdered and then buried by the Khmer Rouge regime in 1975-79, and the famously brutal S-21 prison at Tuol Sleng.
