relax drinking water

June 24, 2008

As with most things in life, what we say we won’t do we end up doing. We got lost. Ok not totally lost like the other time in Sukhothai, but we had difficulties locating the lake area from our initial position in the Central Market. We walked around for a while before finally relenting to taking a tuk-tuk to the guesthouse. It cost 1 USD and I guess it was worth it as it spared much trouble navigating the mazy streets. The lack of light didn’t helpo.

We have arrived at the Boeng Kakarea in Phnom Penh, and checked into a guesthouse spartanly named “No. 9 Guesthouse”. The rooms are minimalist, with fans. My fan is a standing fan without its protective cover. The naked blades threaten to slice my head off later when I sleep.

One great thing is the view of the lake; the guesthouse is on the lake itself and the view from the bar promises to be wonderful tomorrow. We plan to wake up early tomorrow to watch the sunrise. The price is great too: 5 USD for a three-bed room.

Dinner was an underwhelming affair. The restaurant we ate at ran out of practically everything except for beef. The waiter made repeated trips to the kitchen to find out if the ingredients for the dishes we ordered were enough. Each time he comes back with bad news. We got used to the drill after a while. In the end all our dishes had beef in them. The vegetables were great in my opinion, they were the saving grace.

We are sitting in a ramshackle internet cafe using the internet now. My feet are very itchy. Must be the dirty floor. A tiny centipede just crawled pass my side. The computer is old, and the keyboard is not working well. A young Cambodian guy with ah beng-style hair tends to the cafe. He is nice, and he asked where we are from. The pub opposite blasts dated dance and R&B music. Oh, and this other young guy tried to sell weed to us. He didn’t know that being good Singaporeans we don’t partake in drugs. I must taste Angkor beer tomorrow.

I am drinking Relax drinking water.

Ah Cambodiaaaaa
